India marked a groundbreaking milestone today at the inauguration of Semicon India 2025, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi received the country’s first fully indigenous semiconductor chip—the Vikram 32-bit processor, developed by ISRO’s Semiconductor Lab. This pivotal moment reflects the swift momentum of the India Semiconductor Mission, which has committed nearly ₹65,000 crore under its Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme. With five semiconductor fabrication units currently under construction across the country, India’s stride into becoming a global chip powerhouse is no longer a distant vision but a fast-approaching reality.
Industry leaders at the event, such as Kai Beckmann (Merck), highlighted India’s semiconductor potential, projecting the nation’s local chip market to scale to $100 billion by 2030. AMD’s CTO, Mark Papermaster, lauded India’s robust talent ecosystem and the forward-looking vision of its government. With a blend of policy support, global interest, and home-grown innovation, India is steadily building the foundation to be a critical node in the global semiconductor value chain.
