India’s state telecom operator BSNL plans to upgrade its network across India from its current 4G infrastructure to 5G in the next 6-8 months, as per Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia. This upgrade is indigenously developed, marking both a technological milestone and a nod towards telecom self-reliance.
This transition will impact digital inclusion and connectivity, especially in rural and semi-urban parts of India. With 5G, applications that need higher data speeds and low latency (IoT, AR/VR, smart agriculture) become more feasible. While deployment and cost will be challenging, this move could significantly narrow the gap in connectivity and open up new possibilities.
