🚄 Chennai’s Flying Train Is Finally Coming! 🏁 Velachery–St. Thomas Mount MRTS to Launch by November

he long-awaited Velachery–St. Thomas Mount MRTS extension is now set to begin operations by November 2025, according to Tamil Nadu MSME Minister T. M. Anbarasan. This marks a major milestone for Chennai’s transport infrastructure, as the final 5 km stretch—initiated back in 2008—makes its way to completion following persistent delays from land acquisition issues, local protests, and even a bridge-girder collapse in January 2024.

Once operational, this elevated MRTS link will connect Velachery with St. Thomas Mount via new stations at Puzhuthivakkam and Adambakkam, providing seamless integration with the Suburban Railway and Metro systems. At St. Thomas Mount, commuters will finally enjoy a unified transport hub linking multiple networks, potentially accommodating over 100,000 daily travelers and significantly easing road congestion across the city.

🏗️ Why It Was Delayed & Why It Matters

Delays stemmed from legal hurdles, resistance over alignment changes, and the need to demolish homes and infrastructure along the route—especially near St. Thomas Mount. A girder collapse in early 2024 further postponed the project, casting doubts on earlier deadlines. However, according to Ministry officials and local media, construction is nearing its finish line as of mid‑2025.

With Metro Rail (CMRL) poised to take over operations, the MRTS line is expected to undergo upgrades—including modern stations, ticketing, and improved rolling stock—bringing the system up to metro standards. This handover aims to boost mass transit usage, shifting commuters away from congested roads and private vehicles toward more sustainable travel options.

✅ What Happens Next?

  • November 2025: Full passenger service begins on the elevated Velachery–St. Thomas Mount MRTS stretch.
  • Interchange Functionality: The St. Thomas Mount station will serve as a key junction between MRTS, suburban lines, and Metro corridors, including upcoming Corridor 5.
  • Operational Transition: CMRL’s takeover is expected to bring modernization across infrastructure and services, ensuring seamless multi-modal connectivity.
