The Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) is deploying toy-car-sized robots equipped with cameras and AI analysis to crawl through underground water and drainage pipelines to detect illegal connections and leaks.
Developed in collaboration with Indian Institute of Technology Madras and local startups, these robots can traverse up to 500 m inside pipelines, sending real-time data back for enforcement action. With water scarcity and infrastructure stress rising, this innovation could significantly improve monitoring, maintenance and resource efficiency in India’s urban utilities.
