🌐Driverless Metro: Nagpur Metro to Go Fully Automated in Phase 3

Urban mobility in India is set to take a leap with the Nagpur Metro project moving to Grade 4 Unattended Train Operations (UTO) in its upcoming Phase 3 corridor from Sitabuldi to Koradi. This means the metro will operate without any human driver, relying fully on advanced signalling, control systems and new train-sets tailored for full automation. While earlier phases operate with attended or semi-automated systems, only green-field sections are being planned for full automation due to cost and technical constraints.
For commuters and the city’s infrastructure landscape, this marks a shift toward safer, higher-frequency, more efficient urban transit systems typical of developed-country metros. It also signals that Indian metro builders are aspiring for future-ready systems rather than legacy upgrades. The decision also hints at cost-benefit tradeoffs in retrofitting vs green-field automation, which other Indian cities may reference when planning new corridors.
