Apple has expanded its partnership with India’s Tata Group by assigning it the responsibility for after-sales repairs of iPhones and MacBooks in India. This move marks Tata’s growing involvement in Apple’s supply chain, as it already assembles iPhones for both domestic and international markets at three southern Indian facilities. The repair operations will transition from Wistron’s Indian unit, ICT Service Management Solutions, to Tata’s iPhone assembly facility in Karnataka.
As iPhone sales rise in India—reaching approximately 11 million units sold in the past year—Apple’s 7% market share reflects significant growth from just 1% in 2020. This growing market potential and Tata’s expanded role may enable Apple to start selling refurbished devices directly in India, replicating its U.S. model. The shift also underscores Apple’s diversification of its manufacturing base beyond China, with CEO Tim Cook noting that a significant portion of iPhones sold in the U.S. during the June quarter will be made in India.
