🗓️🐕 Deadline Extended: Chennai Gives Pet Owners Time Until December 7 for Rabies Shot & Microchip

Here are the key details about Chennai’s extension of the December 7 deadline for pet dog rabies vaccination and microchipping:

  • The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has pushed back the deadline for pet owners to complete mandatory anti-rabies vaccination + microchipping and get a pet licence — now extended to 7 December.
  • The extension comes following complaints from dog owners about long queues at GCC’s ABC (Animal Birth Control) centres, staff shortages, and technical problems with the registration portal.
  • GCC is offering free microchipping and rabies vaccination at its six pet clinics (Thiru Vi Ka Nagar, Pulianthope, Lloyds Colony, Nungambakkam, Kannammapet, Meenambakkam) as part of its licensing drive.
  • A microchip is mandatory for obtaining the pet dog licence. GCC had earlier made this part of its policy to reduce pet abandonment and track pets.
  • Some pet owners have expressed frustration with the process — citing portal glitches and long waiting times at centers.
  • Once microchipping and vaccination are done, the veterinary officials verify the details via the GCC’s newly-launched online portal/app before issuing the pet licence.
  • The extension gives pet owners two more weeks to comply and avoid the penalty. According to GCC, unlicensed dogs may face a fine of ₹5,000.
