An information has been gathered that the 1-day travel bus-pass fare in the Chennai MTC has been increased from Rs. 50 to Rs. 80. This is to be effective from 8th February (Thursday).
In the Chennai Metro City, over 3700 buses are being operated daily in 806 routes. On an average, 48 lakh passengers travel in these buses. As the boundaries of the Chennai district has been expanded recently, bus services have been introduced to the new city suburban areas as well.
There has been a spurt in the number of passengers who visit from other places. Especially for the city visitors, to facilitate their travel around the city, a bus-pass for Rs. 50 valid for 1-day to travel wherever is available. This has been found to be extremely useful for multiple travels within a day.
Around 5 lakh passengers use this Rs. 50 1-day bus-pass every day. The ticket can be used from 5.00 AM to 11.00 PM. As the expenditure on the printing of multiple tickets for these travels is saved, the administration saves the printing cost. At the same time, the passenger also benefits as there is a considerable reduction in the bus fare.
Subsequent to the bus fares being revised upwards by the state government of Tamil Nadu on 20th January, the system of this 1-day bus pass has been stopped temporarily. This had greatly affected the passengers.
Now, it has been fixed that this 1-day bus-pass fare is increased from Rs. 50 to Rs. 80. The transport officials inform that the new bus-pass fare of Rs. 80 will be effective from 8th February.
The officials further explained that presently, there is no news regarding the 3 types of bus passes issued to the passengers. An announcement is expected in a couple of days.
