Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin inaugurated a modern Gas Insulated Sub-Station (GIS) in his Kolathur constituency, marking a major step toward strengthening Chennai’s power infrastructure. The advanced sub-station, established by TANGEDCO, is designed to ensure uninterrupted electricity supply, reduce power losses, and enhance safety in densely populated urban areas.
The GIS technology uses sulphur hexafluoride (SF₆) gas for insulation, allowing the sub-station to be more compact, efficient, and reliable compared to traditional systems. This project is part of the state’s broader initiative to modernize the power grid and meet the increasing energy demands of Chennai’s growing residential and industrial zones. Officials highlighted that the new sub-station will minimize outages and support future infrastructure developments in the Kolathur region.
