The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has confirmed that India will roll out a home-grown large-scale AI model by February 2026, as part of a national strategy to reduce dependence on foreign AI services. The announcement highlights that the compute infrastructure has already gotten a major boost—38,000 GPUs deployed, far exceeding earlier targets—to support training and inference of this model.
This is a milestone for India’s AI ambition: having a sovereign model means better control over data, customization for local languages and contexts, and enhanced trust. However, the challenge will be ensuring the model is truly robust, inclusive of India’s linguistic diversity, and governed with transparency and ethics. The highway from announcement to meaningful deployment will require talent, compute, and ecosystem support.
