Why it may help your hair
The Sadabahar flower (also called periwinkle) has been used in traditional Indian hair-care remedies for a variety of reasons:
- Antioxidant & anti-inflammatory properties: The flower contains compounds that help neutralise free radicals and reduce inflammation on the scalp, which can otherwise impair hair-follicle health.
- Improved scalp circulation: Some of its bioactive compounds are claimed to boost blood flow in the scalp, thereby delivering more nutrients and oxygen to the hair roots.
- Strengthening hair follicles & reducing dandruff: By soothing scalp irritation and reducing micro-inflammation, it may help hair follicles maintain better grip and reduce hair fall.
How to use Sadabahar flowers for hair growth
Here are three popular DIY methods to incorporate Sadabahar into your hair-care routine:
1. Sadabahar Hair Oil
- Ingredients: A handful of fresh Sadabahar flowers + leaves, 100 ml coconut oil (or olive oil)
- Method: Wash and dry the flowers; heat the oil gently and add the flowers; simmer for ~15-20 minutes on low flame; strain and store in a clean bottle.
- Use: Massage warm oil into the scalp (circular motions) and hair length; leave for at least 30 minutes (or overnight for deeper effect), then shampoo. Use 2-3 times a week.
2. Sadabahar Hair Mask
- Ingredients: A handful of Sadabahar flowers, 2 tbsp honey, 1 tbsp aloe vera gel
- Method: Grind the flowers into a paste; mix with honey + aloe vera; apply to scalp and hair (especially roots); leave for ~30-40 minutes; rinse with lukewarm water and mild shampoo.
- Frequency: Once a week for best results.
3. Sadabahar Hair Rinse / Infusion
- Ingredients: A bowl of Sadabahar flowers, ~1 litre water (or combine with coconut milk)
- Method: Boil the flowers in water for ~10-12 minutes; let it cool and strain. After shampooing, pour this floral water onto scalp and hair; do not rinse off with plain water – let it dry naturally.
- Use: 1-2 times a week.
Tips & Precautions
- Use fresh flowers and leaves where possible to get maximal benefit.
- Perform a patch test first on your scalp to ensure no allergic reaction.
- The evidence is mostly traditional / anecdotal for hair-growth use. Scientific studies on hair growth specifically are limited.
- Avoid very high heat while infusing, as excessive heat may degrade helpful compounds.
- Combine with a balanced diet, adequate hydration, and gentle hair-care practices (avoid harsh chemicals or excessive heat styling) for best overall results.
