Southern Railway has announced a major infrastructure upgrade at Tambaram railway station to improve passenger movement and accessibility. The station will soon see the installation of 9 lifts and 10 escalators on a newly constructed 8-metre-wide Foot Over Bridge (FOB) that connects all platforms — a significant improvement over the older bridge with limited reach. The enhancements are aimed at easing travel for elderly passengers, people with disabilities, pregnant women, patients, and travellers with luggage. Work on the project is expected to be completed by March 2026 following the tender process for the lift installations.
This upgrade comes amid increased passenger traffic at Tambaram, partly due to train diversions while Egmore station undergoes redevelopment.
