TRB (Teachers Recruitment Board) has planned to conduct the teachers recruitment written examination in May. This written examination, originally conducted every year, has not been conducted during the last 3 years due to some legal proceedings in court. The legal issues were closed after 3 years and the written examination was conducted in 2017.
The performance in this examination is valid for 7 years. Around 94000 aspirants who have passed the written examination in the last few years have been awaiting the government appointment as a teacher.
The appointment as a teacher is given not exclusively based on the pass/performance in the above-written examination. A ‘weightage system’ is also followed in the issue of appointment letters.
A merit list is prepared with the performances in the written examination for teacher recruitment, the marks obtained in +2 examinations, marks obtained in the graduate course and B.Ed. course (in case of the secondary school teacher, the marks obtained in the secondary school teacher training), each being given a specific weightage mark.
The graduate teachers and the secondary school teachers are selected based on the above. 90% weightage is given to the performance in the teacher recruitment written examination. Though a candidate passes in the examination, he/she is eligible to write this examination again with a view to improving the marks scored.
Until around 20 years ago, liberal high marks were not given in the school and college examinations. However, in the recent times, the corrections have become liberal and high marks are scored in the SSLC and +2 examinations As compared to these students, the students of the earlier period have a disadvantage as their marks are not so high. So, there has been a persistent appeal that this weightage system must be given up and only the performance in the teacher recruitment examination should be considered for appointments.
In order to review this outlook, a special committee was formed headed by the Chief Secretary of the State Department of Education. The committee reviewed and submitted a report to the government, The report was reviewed by the government.
In this situation, in a high-level committee meeting conducted under the head of the state minister for school education during the 2nd week of January. In this meeting, a decision was taken to continue with the weightage system as the basis of appointment as graduate/secondary teachers and also to conduct the teacher recruitment examination every year.
Accordingly, the Teachers Recruitment Board (TRB) has decided to conduct this examination in May. A high-level official confirmed that as per the decisions taken during the high-level meeting, the recruitment examination will be conducted every year.
