This is a superb piece of news. Soon in the city of Chennai, Wi-Fi facility would be available at 14 tourist spots. The visitors need not worry about the poor internet connectivity in these spots. These 14 spots have been identified by the Union tourism ministry.
For implementing the internet facility in these different spots in Chennai, Tamil Nadu tourism department would be playing a major role as the nodal agency. Feasibility report on providing Wi-Fi spots has been sent by the state run BSNL to the Union tourism ministry.
The various spots that were selected for this purpose would get Wi-Fi facility in a phased manner. This was confirmed by the sources belonging to TN tourism department. According to an official it is now clear that these tourist spots come under the purview of multiple departments. Hence the tourism department would be coordinating with them.
The various tourist spots in Chennai city that would have this internet facility are
Government Museum,
Birla Planetarium,
MGR Memorial,
Muttukadu,
Vandalur based Arignar Anna Zoological Park,
Church at Fort St. George,
Valluvar Kottam,
LightHouse and
Kovalam Beach.
An official later spoke about how the tenders have been floated for providing Wi-Fi facility at the popular Besant Nagar Beach. He also added that his department has been coordinating with the GCC for the sake of this internet facility. He then hinted about working with other departments for providing internet facility at other spots in Chennai.
The Union ministry had previously asked the state operator BSNL to carry out feasibility study for the purpose of setting up Wi-Fi hotspots in 100 tourist hubs in India. Out of these 100 spots, 14 spots are present in the Chennai city. An amount of Rs 2.12 crores would be spent to install the internet facility in the 14 different tourist spots in Chennai.
