E-Pass Returns! Mandatory for Travel to Ooty and Kodaikanal

Why is an e-pass needed now?

Starting April 1, 2025, the Tamil Nadu government has made e-passes mandatory for vehicles entering Ooty (Nilgiris) and Kodaikanal (Dindigul). This rule is based on a directive from the Madras High Court to regulate the influx of tourists and reduce traffic congestion and environmental impact in these eco-sensitive hill stations.

Vehicle Entry Limits:

  • Ooty:
    • Weekdays: Maximum 6,000 vehicles/day
    • Weekends: Maximum 8,000 vehicles/day
  • Kodaikanal:
    • Weekdays: Maximum 4,000 vehicles/day
    • Weekends: Maximum 6,000 vehicles/day

📝 How to Apply for an E-Pass:

  1. Visit: https://epass.tnega.org/
  2. Register/Login: Provide personal details, travel dates, vehicle info, and accommodation proof.
  3. Upload Documents: ID proof, vehicle registration certificate, hotel booking, etc.
  4. Approval: Once verified, your e-pass will be issued digitally.

📢 Public Reaction:

  • Local traders in Ooty protested on April 2 by observing a complete shutdown, fearing this rule will impact tourism and their livelihoods.
  • Autos, taxis, restaurants, and hotels joined the protest.
  • Protesters have demanded a revision of the restrictions.

⚖️ Government’s Stand:

  • The Tamil Nadu Government has challenged the High Court’s order, stating that scientific data from IIT Madras and IISc Bangalore should guide any vehicle limit policies, not arbitrary numbers.

🧳 Travel Tips for Tourists:

  • Apply for your e-pass well in advance.
  • Carry valid accommodation proof and ID.
  • Respect the environmental rules and avoid littering.
  • Be ready for vehicle checks at entry points.

These new rules are aimed at preserving the beauty and ecology of Ooty and Kodaikanal while ensuring smoother traffic flow during the busy summer season.
