45% of All MSMEs Likely to Benefit from ECLGS 5.0: SBI Research

India’s Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) are set to receive a major financial boost as the government rolls out the Emergency Credit Line Guarantee Scheme (ECLGS) 5.0. According to a recent SBI Research report, nearly 1.1 crore MSME accounts – representing around 45% of the total MSME portfolio – are expected to benefit from the scheme.

The latest version of the ECLGS aims to provide additional working capital support to businesses affected by global economic disruptions, especially the ongoing geopolitical tensions in West Asia. The scheme is expected to unlock an additional credit flow of nearly ₹2.55 lakh crore across sectors.

What is ECLGS 5.0?

The Emergency Credit Line Guarantee Scheme was initially introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic to support businesses facing financial stress. Under ECLGS 5.0, eligible MSMEs can access additional credit up to 20% of their peak working capital utilization during Q4 FY26, capped at ₹100 crore per borrower.

The government provides a 100% guarantee for MSME loans under the scheme, encouraging banks and financial institutions to lend without major risk concerns. The aviation sector has also been included with a 90% guarantee cover and a dedicated allocation of ₹5,000 crore.

SBI Research Estimates Significant Impact

SBI Research estimates that eligible MSMEs could receive an average additional credit flow of ₹2 lakh to ₹2.3 lakh per account. The report highlighted that the scheme could strengthen liquidity, protect jobs, and ensure supply chain continuity during uncertain economic conditions.

The report also noted that previous versions of the ECLGS played a crucial role in stabilizing the MSME sector after the pandemic. Earlier schemes reportedly helped save around 13.5 lakh MSME accounts from turning into non-performing assets (NPAs) and protected employment for nearly 1.5 crore workers.

Aviation Sector Among Key Beneficiaries

Apart from MSMEs, the aviation sector is expected to gain significantly from ECLGS 5.0. Rising aviation turbine fuel (ATF) costs and reduced passenger demand due to global tensions have placed pressure on airlines. The scheme allows airlines to access additional credit up to 100% of their peak working capital utilization, subject to a cap of ₹1,500 crore per borrower.

SBI Research stated that the ₹5,000 crore support package for aviation could provide substantial liquidity relief and help maintain operational stability in the sector.

Strengthening India’s MSME Ecosystem

The MSME sector remains one of the strongest pillars of the Indian economy, contributing significantly to employment generation, manufacturing output, and exports. The timely implementation of ECLGS 5.0 is expected to improve financial resilience among businesses and support economic recovery amid global uncertainties.

With banks already witnessing strong MSME credit growth and improved asset quality, the scheme could further accelerate lending momentum while reducing financial stress for small businesses across the country.
