State government is in the process of raising five centers solely dedicated for the purpose of women protection and empowerment. These centers provide temporary shelter, legal counselling and medical aid for all women in need at the times of distress.
Earlier in Tambaram one of such facilities was opened in January 2017. The center helped 84 women among which 34 women were affected by the domestic abuse. They were given shelter and food along with necessary counselling for their betterment of the future in terms of deciding the next step. Five members including a counsellor and a helper resolved many such domestic and social issues concerned with women empowerment and development. Child marriages were stopped by this group and had helped many women by providing proper knowledge about their own rights in the society.
Eighty percent of the victims were sent to their homes after resolving their respective issues. Few of them were sent to NGOs providing proper care for the women in need of help through vocational training.
Now the government along with this established center sanctioned Rs 80.64 lakh to set up five additional centers across the state in the areas such as Kanchipuram, Trichy, Madurai, Salem and Coimbatore. Request for installing such centers in remaining 26 districts are in talks and will be finalized very soon said one of the officials.
Through police intervention several cases had been solved with the help of the center. One girl was given proper assistance when she complained about the man abusing her physically and mentally under the guise of providing her a job. Immediately a case was registered with her complaint and the team along with the police assistance sorted out the entire issue. Most of the women visit the center directly or referred through police, NGOs or district social welfare officer. Officials in this platform are in the plans to combine the facility of 181 (The National women’s emergency helpline) integrating the line with AMMA call center.
