In the recent times we have been hearing news about the monsoon setting in the Chennai city. The latest news that has come out now is the elusive monsoon might finally arrive in Chennai city. According to the weatherman it is now said that the low pressure area moving towards TN coast might intensify. Low pressure area over central Andaman Sea that is moving rapidly towards Tamil Nadu coast might bring heavy rainfall in Chennai city and this would happen by 13th of November 2018. This was confirmed by few weather experts. According to the Indian Meteorological Department or IMD, the system would intensify into cyclonic storm after 48 hours of time.
It is important to note that the low pressure area over the central parts of Andaman Sea is associated with cyclonic circulation or swirling motion of winds. These winds extends up to mid- tropospheric levels that is average 17 km altitude at the equator. In the next 24 hours, low pressure area is likely to become well marked and it would move west-north-westwards and concentrate into depression in the next 24 hours. Finally it would change into a cyclonic storm. By the middle of next week, coastal Tamil Nadu and Chennai would have heavy rains.
Mr. Mahesh Palawat, chief meteorologist, Skymet Weather, spoke about how any weather system that is moving fast would not intensify into a severe cyclone. He then added that even if it intensifies into a cyclone near the coast it would not produce severe effects. He later threw light on the models that indicate that it would be close to the northern TN coast by 13th of November. He also revealed that the weather system could further intensify only if it stays in the ocean for a time of 8 to 10 days. There would not be enough time for the system to intensify.
Wind speeds between 65 kmph to 75 kmph that might reach 85 kmph over central and adjoining south Bay of Bengal were predicted by the IMD on 13th of November. The condition of the sea would be rough to high over the same area. Cloudy skies with light rains have been predicted by the IMD for the next 48 hours. Since the onset of monsoon many coastal districts like Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli and Thoothukudi have been recording rainfall is known. Now IMD has issued heavy rainfall warning at many isolated places in south Tamil Nadu.
